Welcome to Chip Away Golf
A first note on building a golf home around patience, honest progress, and useful tools.
Whether you're an experienced golfer or picking up a club for the first time, golf has this way of completely humbling us, or making us feel like a pro.
There's no better feeling than going for a par 5, 200+ out and puring a 4 iron. But there's no worse feeling than bombing a drive, to only chunk a 50 yard wedge in and take the 10 foot walk of shame.
These are the two extremes, and most of us live somewhere between the two, but still constantly chasing the high of bombed drives, crisp wedges, and a one putt. Somewhere along the way it gets exhausting trying to get better without it feeling like a slog. We lose the real reason we started in the first place.
Why this exists
I built Chip Away Golf for one purpose: to remind myself that this game is just that; a game. While, of course, I want to improve and I think we all want to chase scratch; it shouldn't feel like a slog. We need to remind ourselves constantly where we started and why we're still out at those 6am tee times. Sure, it's for the bombed drives, the super cool flop shot we only pull off once out of 10 times. But it's also for that morning breeze walking down the fairway, fresh dew on your shoes. The scalding cup of gas station coffee (that oddly hits) on the first tee watching the sun rise. And of course, the occasional chirp to your friend who pumped one OB. My hope is that by sharing my own journey with golf, I can add my own flair to the golf world.
The working philosophy
- We'll never be perfect, strive for progress
- Be curious, not frustrated
- Keep it simple
- Above all, enjoy the walk
What comes next
As a software developer, the scorecard app started as a side project, just to learn some new technologies. But I actually started using it for its simplicity. I'll keep building it out, one feature at a time (no promises on the timeline). I'll also keep writing about the rounds that go well, and the rounds that don't. Eventually, I'll share some videos and conversations. None of this is about having all the answers. It's about documenting the journey as it happens.
The ultimate plan is simple: keep chipping away.
Until next time,
-- Jack
Golf is hard, enjoy it anyway
